Design Museum

Our current project involving type is going to be placed in the Design Museum in London!
I have chosen to do some research into this museum prior to being my project.

Here is some of the artwork on display which is very courageous and creative which i feel is good because it allows such a scope for design and expression which I will be looking to stretch to the fullest in this project!

Experimenting with typeface

after researching artist I found my most interests were based around Stefan Sagmeister & David Carson who I will be placing images from research in to this blog!

my artbook contains descriptions and defines why I chose these artists.

Fontstruct

We were instructed to design a font using fontstruct, i have used it before with very little knowledge on www.fonstruct.com

I am going back a step and visiting the blog from there site and going through tutorials.

My font is based on Jazz & I've done research into  Jazz poster's and thinking how I will express my font!

Typography Research

After researching into the fonts that I found interesting and choosing a main font that I was interested, I chose Futura and after research I found a blog with a great amount of information -

Through Doing my Typography research for the project set for the start of the new year, I have stumble across a blog.

http://ilovetypography.com/ - This is the web page that i found and have been doing a large amount of research through.

I am storing blog on here that I will visit throughout doing research into type ;

SP1 - Resubmission

I have been researching stephan sagmeister te graphic designer and writing a statement about my findings on his work, his personal work and his lifestyle.

Understanding his lifestyle can help me to understand his thought process and possibly give me an idea of different types of ways to be able to go through a design process which I could attempt and see first hand the different types of processes.

This is the book that I have been reading to do my research in to sagmeister, it has a cover on it that edits the design on the cover of the book which you can see.

In researching stefan sagmeister I done a lot of research through video, for example he has a numerous amount of videos on TED.com which are educational and also inspirational.

After visiting TED.com and then searching 'stefan sagmeister'...

These are a list of the videos that I have watched on him on the TED website, I have written about a couple of the videos that in my statement about stefan in some more details.
Below I have listed all of the  links to all of the videos that can be viewed via TED.com :

Creating Letterheads

After simplifying the logo I decided to keep the letter head simple I produced a lot of different designs.
here's the process that i took to make the letterheads using indesign.

here is the 1st design that I did for the letter head.

first business card that I designed using a different size, I made them smaller in height and keeping the same length to give it a good effect, the only reason i may not do this is because they would not show if they were placed in a wallet!

even though i think this would be better, so I will keep experimenting!

Below are some idea's of business cards.

Letterhead Research

I downloaded this Letterhead Book which holds designs of letter heads, I have selected a couple that I like and would like to assess before designing my own.
this is one of my favourite, it is very well designed as well as simple. It is expected to be good as it is designed by sagmeister who is a very well known graphic designer, and one of my favourite designers.

this is a example, of how I could use different types of paper and use different tones!
I like this one because of the simplicity of it and the way that they use the white space.
this is also a good one because of the simplicity and also how they have separated the logo and the address.

here is a stationary suite that has used the the centred theme throughout all of the stationary items.

General Research

ChickenBrainKen's Team decided to make there Logo out of hair!

Below is the link that shows the design process it took to make this which I thought was very interesting and the video is also quite interesting.

Font

I have been researching font that I think look visually pleasing that are pixelated I didn't find that many as I think there is a thin line between a good font and a bad font when it comes to pixelated fonts, I discovered the pixels used the better it looks and I van pretty much use as many pixels as I like but I'd need to make it match the hand that I have as the official logo!

This shouldnt be too hard, the hard part is Trying to perfect the lettering on fontstruct on each letter in the alphabet to make it all similar, it's more time consuming that anything but I will have this done soon and then my logo will be completed!

Some research I undertook, I have attached below these are all different types of ways that pixelated fonts work, by looking at these I have understood how I need to do my font and also how I can differ mine to others to make my font unique, this will help the branding for the company also because it helps make the identity it's own having it's own font such as Disney and numerous other well known companies.

After using fontstruct and looking at the different ways i can use pixelated type, I have put together and example of how the type would look for the logo.
this was my first attempt to use the font i had designed, i am overall pleased with this font but I am not satisfied with the 'N' and will have to go back and change it but due to the dimensions of every other letter i will have to make it work using the same width because the font is quite squeezed together and the 'N' seems to make it look very uneven and unattractive.

After putting my font in with the logo design i had in mind, i wasnt pleased with the outcome so i went back to designing the logo and looked at sites such as :

Type Logo's

Due to the nature of the company name i'd like to look to basing the logo simply on type.

These three logo's above are based on type and are very effective.
the above logo's have a symbol attached to the side of the type, this could work well aslong as the type is related to the symbol.
this shows a good way of using negative space within type.

Fingerprints

Being that out companies called hand to hand I thought of the idea of putting a fingerprint in the logo, I got some finger prints off google first and will be experimenting with more on my own.
my initials thoughts were this is a bit complicated to put on a logo so i will attempt to simplify it as much s i can!

I found a few interesting designs on the website below, that showed many differnt types of design to use for logos using fingerprints.

Negative Space in Logo's

I was looking into incorporating negative space into my logo, this can be a task some times because if its too basic then it can be hard to understand but if its too complicated its not very visually pleasing, I have done an internet search and pulled together some of the piece's I like and think look good.

These logo examples gave me the idea to try and connect two hands using negative space, I will do research into negative space images and hands and how they could possibly connect, using all if hear thoughts together could produce a nice outcome by possibly using the pixelated idea connected with negative space, going back to my rough sketchbook I will try scamp somebodeas of how they could connect? But what I will need to figure out is because I was going to have different hand signs for each part of the company such as a different hand sign on the bike than the van and also a different hand on delivery boxes than letters etc whether I would have to continue the negative space throughout all of them and in the long run it could possibly limit the amount I'd be able to do creatively!? I will have the answer to this question once I have scamper a couple ideas and completed my research into how this logo could work!

Perfume Box

couple parts of research into perfume box's and my thoughts.

\

above are a couple images of perfume box that i looked at prior to designing mine, the colour used on all of them all have brilliant relation to the name of the product.

This has 'eau de toilette' below which I thought would make sense to input into the 'paris' perfume since its french.

I chose to do the perfume box on the names poison & paris, through researching them through the internet (below) I decided to base some designs off typography which could further my knowledge.

I also researched the word paris and the main images that came in were of the eiffel tower and i didn't want to put these images on to the perfume box because I felt it was very simple minded and wouldn't get the message across that I wanted.

after researching paris and realising that I would mainly look to make text the main front for the perfume box I decided that I would have to find a good text to place on the front for both of the designs, instead of simply looking through dafont or similar sites I took a book out in the library and thought Id attempt looking at not only font but ways to place lettering etc.
