Indesign Techniques

In this session we worked on completing a poster with strict guidelines on how the layout and measurements should be.

Being given a folder with numerous photos, fonts and text we had to complete the given task.
(the folder given to us with the assets to use)

This is the final design.

Logo Designs - Horus

I did my logo design for the company name of Horus and it is a watch company, so i decided to research some high end watch companies as i decided to make a logo that perceived it as a expensive and vintage company such as rolex etc.

they are all based off having a stylish typeface which i will look into doing for this and maybe giving it a a small symbol to give it class

below is some research I did on horus and the images that are related to him.

Logo Research

Some research i have done for the newest project on logo's.

the above logo only lasted a year before Steve Jobs commissioned graphic designer Rob Janoff to come up with something, oh I don’t know, a little bit more modern. Janoff’s eventual design would go on to become one of the most iconic and recognizable corporate logos in history.
According to Janoff, the “bite” in the Apple logo was originally implemented so that people would know that it represented an apple, and not a tomato. It also lent itself to a nerdy play on words (bite/byte), a fitting reference for a tech company. Quick sidenote: Corporate design sure was a lot simpler in the 70′s. Nowadays, companies like Pepsi spend millions of dollars on logo re-designs that are based on complete BS and new age mumbo jumbo.

example of the logo being both implicit and explicit since it would of once been unknown to be conducted with computers but because of the companies success it has become know everywhere!

Through an internet search I found the top 38 top rated logo's and below is the link to the website it was on.

I have taken a couple of the logos from this site and I'm going to annotate them.

This is the world wildlife fund logo and this panda has become very well known through there advertisements and publicity, this panda is specifically made using negative space which helps it be recognised as a symbol.
I can image that when this was first released that it wouldn't of been recognised as the WWF logo but after it being publicised massively its been placed at the bottom of posters and advertisements and is well known!

This is a early logo that mercedes used for there advertisements which holds the logo and has the company name involved in the logo, this was to get them known.

This is the logo that they use now because they are an established company and there logo is well known!
This is usually how car companies do there logo and after they get known they don't incorporate there company name.

This is the Hewlett Packard logo has always implied its for HP, because it has the initials in the logo to imply the relations.

this is another completely implied logo since it has the name in the logo and has a simple but effective design incorporated with it.

Research into Designers

In monday's session with malcolm we were looking at logo design and graphic designers that have produced famous corporate identities.

Tom Geismar, is an american graphic designer who has a company called Chermayeff & Geismar
this is tom geismar and his partners company in new york.
below is a animated video of all of the logos they have created and made for there clients.

Malcolm Monday Session (Colour)

in this session we discussed colours in photoshop etc.
below shows the colour systems and how they mix together.
this screenshot is from a youtube video that I found relating to the subject we discussed in class and below is the video.

Occupational Fonts - Graffiti

I decided to do my occupational fonts on graffiti, i began to do graffiti type in my layout pad and sketchbook, after only doing brief research I went to bower ashton library and took out books on banksy and some other various artists after carrying out my research I came to the conclusion graffiti was much more than just 'tagging' and type done in different ways, graffiti is a way of thinking using your imagination to create good art.

(couple of the books used for my research)

so after my research below i decided for my occupational fonts to do some graffiti work of my own.
this is a piece of graffiti work with a picture incorporated with the image.

this is  a banksy piece, this image shows that it is as much about the surroundings as it is about the artwork.

another banksy famous piece of graffiti which is primarily a cartoon drawing, with text attached.

again a image that is much more powerful than a piece of text.

some graffiti with cartoon characters around it.

this is a perfect example of graffiti, banksy has used the background to make the image much stronger.
through this research i will go out and look for sites to place my artwork.

this research has helped me think through the design and process and also the background imaging that is going to be in my occupational fonts work.

After doing research into Graffiti, I wanted to experiment with giving one word two meanings!
as there are graffiti 'artists' and tattoo 'artists' i thought i would attempt to draw artist on my forearm as a tattoo and see how it goes.

I printed off one type of the words "artist" and I cut out the shape so i could trace it on to my arm and make it look like a tattoo.

after cutting the letters out, I attempted to trace the word onto my arm.
this didn't work very well since it was hard to hold the stencil on and write it myself. I didn't think this worked well so I tried to do it on my hand also.

this was also slightly hard because i was doing it on my own hand & i would of liked to do "tattoo" on the other hand but couldn't because i can't draw left handed, i also feel that because it was on my hand i wasn't able to do the colour properly, I would like to develop this idea on someone else or possibly do it on photoshop or illustrator and cover the body possibly, similar to some of stefan sagmeisters work below.

Olli - Thursday

Today we continued working on indesign and we designed a booklet using a sheet of paper!

"we first has to fold the a4 sized paper to make 8 rectangles, we then cut a line in the middle of
the page and after that we folded it together as shown below, we then noted on each page, page 1, page 2 etc. after this we went on to indesign and had to do the mathematics and work out the dimensions so we could put image or text on to each square and it would fit right, we did this using simple maths and the guides in indesign.

I first did the guidelines and designed one with the numbers like the drawn one to show that i had the dimensions right.

(two above images are the first attempts of completing the fold)

(this was the first one that i made off the mac, using indesign)

(here are the two i design as markers for my measurements etc)

here are a couple screen shots of me designing my final booklet design, i used roy licheinsteins work in my booklet and thought i would take previous images of his without editing them to try and make a story line that made sense..
